Described as: | |||
This has been sitting in our store for years. It has NO DISK, but is otherwise complete. I have not tried powering it on but it was working before being out on the shelf. Sold as-is for spares but may well work with a suitable disk.

What did it come with: | |||
Just the workstation, no keyboard or mouse, disks, manuals or packaging.
Notes: | |||
Memory: Is made up of three banks with two DSIMM slots each, the official maximum configuration uses 16MB modules, but the first bank can also hold 32MB modules giving a maximum of 128MB memory. Hard Drive Storage: It can hold one internal 3.5-inch 50-pin, single-ended, fast-narrow SCSI drive and a floppy drive. It also supports external SCSI devices. There is no IDE/ATAPI support. Whilst there appears to be no limit (other than scsi disc capacity), the maximum internal storage for the boot partition appears to depend on what version of the openboot prom is installed. Video: 13W3 to VGA converters are available. However there are two types, make sure you get the sun sun specific version otherwise they will not work. Additionally the output resolution and the frame rate are non standard a lot of modern VGA monitors will not sync. I found the best way was to use an older (pre HD ready) LCD TV with VGA or the older NEC Multisync range of monitors seem to work well. Battery Backup: Like all other SPARCstation systems, the SPARCstation LX holds system information such as MAC address and serial number in NVRAM. If the battery on this chip dies, then the system will not be able to boot, but it is possible to set a MAC address manually on each boot. |
Now I have it in my hands
Questions we don't know the answer to yet:
- Does it still work?
- Do we need to recap the PSU?
- What state is the NVRAM in?
Hopefully we can answer those along the way...
Next steps:
As the workstatition comes without a HDD, OS or suitable monitor connectivity there maybe additional steps once we get visibility of the BIOS/ OS installed.
- Acquire additional parts (keyboard, mouse)
- Convert and hookup to a VGA monitor - HDMI bonus
- Install HDD & OS
- Clean
- Memory upgrades
- Can we get AberMud working
As I get to each stage I'll create a sperate blog post.
